Utah Gun Shows
Gun shows are a chance for collectors, hunters, target shooters, plinkers, and other gun enthusiasts to get together to buy, sell or trade.  Many people who have inherited an old gun and decide to sell it find shows to be a good place to find out what they have and take offers.  Shows also provide a forum to exchange ideas on political events threatening gun shows and other freedoms.  Although unspoken, the opponents of gun shows probably are as eager to eliminate gun shows for their ability to influence political events as for any impact on safety.
Licensed dealers are required to do a background check prior to selling any modern firearm, the same as if they were making their sale at their shop.  People who are not "engaged in the business" as a firearms dealer, but are merely selling their own gun, or sellers of antique guns are not required to conduct background checks.  (In fact the law PROHIBITS them from access to any criminal history records information.)  Some private sellers would be glad to have an opportunity to ensure that they are not selling a gun to a prohibited person, but not if it subjects them to a massive record keeping scheme and registration of everyone who has owned, sold or purchased any type of gun.
